Now in his fifties, Fredy Massamba remains in a class of his own. On his YouTube channel, he is known as “Congo’s voice of Afro-soul,” reflecting the pride he takes in his musical journey that began in Pointe-Noire, Congo-Brazzaville, and has since reached the world. Now based in Montreal, Fredy’s parents instilled a love of music in him, and he discovered Congolese rumba through the radio. In 1991, he co-founded Les Tambours de Brazza, achieving international success. He’s also collaborated with Zap Mama, Didier Awadi, and Manou Gallo. In 2011, Fredy released his first solo album, Etnophony, nominated for the 2012 African Kora Awards. At the 2020 Afro Artistic Awards, he received a tribute for his illustrious career. Fredy’s latest album, Trancestral, transcends his ancestral roots, bringing Congo-Brazzaville’s 1960s musical repertoire into the future, still bearing the influence of his early work with Les Tambours de Brazza.
