Gonia 🇰🇷
Gonia is a jazz ensemble that seamlessly blends traditional Korean rhythms with sophisticated jazz elements, drawing attention both at home and internationally for their mastery of Korean instruments and rhythms. Gonia has created a new style of K-jazz based on traditional Korean rhythms on the janggu (hourglass-shaped, double headed drum) with smooth and progressive guitar and bass licks with sophisticated melodies. In November 2020, Gonia’s fifth album, A Tension, was released and nominated in the “Crossover Album” category of the 18th Korean Popular Music Awards. Their music features different traditional rhythms - the breath of the gutgeori, the joy of jajinmori, and the dynamism that comes from whimori – are all harmonized with improvisation and the beauty of jazz to create Gonia’s unique sound! Gonia has performed at several prestigious World Music festivals, Seoul Music Week (Korea’s signature international music event), English Folk Expo (UK), Visa for Music (Morocco), Fluvial (Chile) and Copenhagen Jazz Festival (Denmark).
