Pupy y Los Que Son Son

TD Sunfest's reputation for presenting extraordinarily talented Cuban bands surely has reached a new high in 2015, heating up the dance floor with the Afro-Cuban All Stars, Adonais Puentes & The Voices of Cuba Orchestra – and Pupy y Los Que Son Son!  César "Pupy" Pedroso is one of the key figures not only in timba, but also in the last forty years of Cuban pop music. As well as being one of Cuba's best and most prolific composers, he played a seminal role in revolutionizing the art of salsa keyboard playing. Pupy first rose to fame as an outstanding pianist in Elio Revé's mighty Orquesta Revé, and then as the founding member, along with Juan Formell, of Cuba's most popular dance band, Los Van Van (the headliners of TD Sunfest '14). During his thirty-two years with these groups, he composed some of their greatest hits.

In 2001, Pupy left Los Van Van to form Pupy Y Los Que Son Son.  And if his music had been good before, with the new band it went ballistic!  As well as producing thrilling new versions of many of his popular Los Van Van songs, he was responsible for the extraordinarily infectious blending of "Son con Rumba," which, to this day, continues to inspire dancers around the world.  So far, the band has seven recordings, and the latest is 2011's Siempre PUPY (EGREM Records Cuba).

Back in 2010, The New York Times' Ben Ratliff observed: "The thing about Pupy y los Que Son Son…is how casual it is about blowing a hole through you.  It's the almost absurdly high confidence, attack and playfulness, the band's whole wizardly performance rhetoric - especially in rhythm and vocals - that's astonishing, if only because it's so seldom seen here.  But at the end of the night, it's not heroism; it's professionalism."
