The Aeolian Performing Arts Centre - $25 Advance/$30 Door
March 30, 2012 - 8:00pm
For more than 20 years, Ensemble Vivant has been performing to sold-out houses across North America and Europe.
Comprised of Catherine Wilson (piano/artistic director), Erica Beston (violin) and Sybil Herceg-Shanahan (cello), the group is on a quest to illuminate unusual and rarely heard works from the classical repertoire, as well as new versions of diverse styles from jazz to musical theatre to Latin Dance. As is the case for its Sunfest appearances, the core trio frequently works in a quartet setting with Canada's award-winning jazz & classical music bassist Dave Young, who has performed with everyone from Lenny Breau and Oscar Peterson to Cedar Walton and Gary Burton. To date, Ensemble Vivant has released eleven CDs, including "Audience Favourites” which celebrates the 20th anniversary of its distinguished recording career by showcasing the diversity of its repertoire, and Ensemble Vivant’s signing to the prestigious Canadian Brass-owned Opening Day Recordings label (with international distribution through Universal). Indeed, Ensemble Vivant is that rarest of chamber groups blessed with an authentic flare and genuine affinity for other musical idioms. For instance, jazz greats Rick Wilkins and Don Thompson have often arranged for Ensemble Vivant. Tango authority Julien Labro has written arrangements of Astor Piazzolla's music exclusively for the ensemble based on its authentic approach to the art form.
Ensemble Vivant's Sunfest date on March 30th will include selections from the group’s 2011 hit recording “Homage to Astor Piazzolla,” (arguably, the greatest tango musician and composer of all time, who created a distinctive twentieth century sound called “Tango Nuevo”), as well as delectable music by Aldemaro Romero, Duilio Dobrin, and many others.
