Like many of the great Irish traditional bands, Caladh Nua formed simply as a result of a handful of stellar musicians crossing paths, forging a special connection and then wanting to share their vibe with a global audience.
The ensemble consists of five extremely talented musicians from three beautiful regions in Ireland: counties Carlow, Waterford and Kilkenny. Caladh is an old Irish word meaning "Harbour" or "Shelter place," and Caladh Nua means "New Harbour" or "New Shelter place". Caladh Nua can also refer to a comfortable new place where music and song create a warm and inviting atmosphere. With all this in mind, The Sunfest World Music & Jazz Series is proud to bring back Caladh Nua, the traditional Irish band whose sound is buoyed by “a fresh youthful approach, a sense of fun and a willingness to [venture off] the beaten path”.
Founded in early 2009, Caladh Nua strikes a perfect balance between innovation and the preservation of Ireland’s unique cultural traditions. Irish Music Magazine raved: “Solid traditional music with plenty of flair and a lot of musical imagination”. American Public Radio echoed those sentiments: "What a terrific, young band. We are going to play a lot of them. We suspect they are going to be around a long time".
